BREAST ADORNMENT PROSTHETIC DEVICE The present invention relates to a breast prosthesis garment. Breast prostheses are necessary for women who have undergone radical mastectomies, usually in the treatment for breast cancer. Generally, an acceptable breast prosthesis is designed to replicate the appearance of the natural breast while being comfortable to wear.
The prior art of breast prostheses shows a number of attempts to achieve one or the other of those objectives, although with limited success of achieving both. Among the problems not completely solved in the prior art include achieving a natural look and feel to the prosthesis. Related to this problem is the perceived need to maintain a balanced weight of the prosthesis relative to the remaining natural breast. This may be less of a concern with actual wearers who are likely to feel that weight is less of a concern than maintaining a natural relationship between the prosthesis and the chest of the wearer. Many patients complain that the location of the prosthesis in relation to the chest wall shifts and there is nothing in the way of "feedback" to the wearer that the prosthesis is in the correct position.
An additional problem is the method of attachment of the breast prosthesis by the patient. A common solution is to place the prosthesis in a pocket of a bra. This is neither a complete answer as the prosthesis may shift out of position inside the bra and, even if securely placed in the bra, does not have a natural feel to the wearer since it does not maintain its position with respect to the chest as is true of a natural breast. U.S. Pat. No. 6,156,065 discloses a combined bandeau and bra for retaining a breast prosthesis in place on the anterior chest wall of a mastectomy patient in which the breast cup for the natural breast is replaced over the mastectomy site by a bandeau with hook and loop type fastening material for the fixation of the breast prosthesis and a folding cup for covering the breast prosthesis. The material closest to the chest wall of the patient is an inner layer which is preferably of cotton.
Another solution is to attach the prosthesis directly to the skin of the patient with adhesives. EP 0 392 960 A1 discloses a breast prosthesis aggregate consisting of a flexible resilient breast prosthesis imitating a female left or right breast and flexible fastening siabs sealable to the skin of the wearer by means of a skin-friendly adhesive. The prosthesis can be releasably secured to the slabs by complementary interacting attachment members, preferably of the hook-and-loop type with the hooks on the prosthesis, placed on a backward ledge on the prosthesis and the front side of the slabs.
U.S. Pat. No. 4,356,573 discloses a silicone rubber breast prosthesis formed in a shaped mold for insertion into a bra, the prosthesis having a center part laterally encircled by a border or edge part. A plate member is vulcanized in the surface of the border part which faces towards the chest of the wearer for fastening a double-sided adhesive platelet fixed to the chest of the wearer. U.S. Pat. No. 4,426,742 discloses a breast form prosthesis of a silicone rubber composition designed to attach directly to the body via a plug mechanism.
British Patent No. 521.238 discloses an article for female wear in the form of a single- breasted of double-breasted artificial bust, comprising one or two preferably hollowing fielding breast-shaped members made of sponge rubber or rubberized hair, covered with one or several layers of fabric, e.g. silk or artificial silk. The article is attached to the wearer by ribbons or straps passing round the body at breast level and/or over the shoulder.
U.S. Pat. No. 5,458,635 discloses an artificial breast form which includes contoured, molded breast shape layers that can be sculptured by the user to create a cosmetically acceptable appearance. The artificial breast form comprises a cover with adhesive nylon tape surface to adhere to the inner cup of the brassiere, an external molded layer abutting against the cover, an internal molded layer abutting against the external molded layer, and a back molded layer located between the internal layer and the breast. The cover can include lace trim or a picot edge.
While these prostheses minimize problems associated with security and shifting, several drawbacks have been described in the prior art. Having a device in contact with the skin for long periods of time interferes with the skin’s natural ability to perspire and breathe.
Prostheses of silicone rubber are relatively heavy and require strong adhesives. They can also be difficult or uncomfortable to remove when desired; for instance, while sleeping. Furthermore, a tight adhesive fitted to the chest traps heat and prevents ventilation of the skin surface.
The many solutions described in the prior art to arrive at acceptable solutions for missing one or both breasts after mastectomy hardly take the emotional aspects thereof into account. The patient must live with a prosthesis, usually made of silicone rubber, but that will never return a body-like feeling. The prior art does not disclose breast prosthetic devices which combine functionality and an attractive appearance which will enhance the beauty and/or status of the wearer.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a breast prosthesis device which solves or at least minimizes the problems mentioned above associated with attachment to the skin, which is functional, adorns the body and gives the wearer a sense of self-worth.
It has now been found that this object can be achieved by a breast prosthesis device that is directly and releasably fixed to the body, without straps, or the like, the device being made of textile material, lightweight, decorative, flexible and resilient, and comprising an adhesive securing patch to keep the breast prosthesis device against the body of the wearer.
According to a first aspect of the invention, a breast adornment prosthesis device is provided for camouflaging a missing or deformed female breast after mastectomy, comprising the following elements: (1) a composite structure with an aesthetic appearance having: (a) moulding means to provide a predetermined basic structure; (b) layering means substantially made of textile materials; and, optionally, (c) supplemental adornment means; (2) adhesive attachment means for detachably securing the composite structure to the body of the wearer.
The moulding means is the basis of the composite structure in that it provides or contributes to a reinforced basis of a predetermined shape for the layering of the textile material{s) which are applied or stitched around this basis. The moulding means comprises one or more pads or a pouch, for example of polyester fibers, or the like, and filled with a filler, such as fiber fill, foam rubber, fluffy material, or the like to give the composite structure the desired size and shape.
The composite structure preferably has a circular circumference at the bottom side, i.e. the side facing the body of the wearer, which is relatively flat and flexible in order to engage with the folds of the skin. The shape of the composite structure may vary from, e.g., relatively flat (disc-shaped) to rounded to mimicking the remaining breast. It is important that the composite structure adorns the body of the wearer in addition to its function to camouflage the missing or deformed breast.
In one embodiment of the present invention the layering means comprise at least one layer of textile which surrounds the moulding means and is connected therewith.
In another embodiment of the invention the layering means comprise multiple layers of textile materials and/or pads which are preferably applied layer by layer around the moulding means. The various layers may have different lateral dimensions depending on the desired shape and size of the composite structure on the one hand and the desired adornment and appearance of the composite structure on the other hand.
The layering means of a plurality of individual layers and/or pads are preferably constructed of a variety of soft, porous, resilient, lightweight textile materials, such as satin, polyester fibers, cotton, cotton fiber fill, viscose, silk, lace, wool, linen, hemp, lyocell, modal, bamboo or other eco materials, or the like, and combinations thereof. The material for the layers is preferably at least partly spongy and flexible allowing the layers to be compressed, bent, twisted or the like after which the layers have an inherent “memory” which allow the layers to return to an original shape after being deformed. The thickness of the layers can be varied and is dependent of the type of textile used. It contributes to both the size and shape, and the appearance of the composite structure and thus of the breast adornment prosthetic device as a whole. The material for the layers preferably have good launderability characteristics.
In an embodiment of the present invention the material for the layers is at least in part selected from the finest decorative textile material, such as pure fabrics like khadi, silks, organza, brocade, tissue, crepe and georgette, satin or lace to contribute to a decorative and/or distinguished appearance of the breast adornment prosthetic device according to the invention.
The adornment means for improving the appearance of the composite structure can be any material or design which is for example used in fashion, such as decorative textiles mentioned above, jewels, decorative stones, or the like. These materials are usually fixed to the visible outer layers of the composite structure or form part thereof.
The adhesive attachment means for securing the composite structure to the body of the wearer form part of the breast prosthetic device according to the invention. The attachment means can be in the form of an adhesive sheet for skin patch, having at least one adhesive layer on a support. The adhesive layer usually comprises at least a thermoplastic elastomer, as is well known in the art.
In a preferred embodiment the attachment means is a double-sided adhesive tape with an adhesive layer which is adapted to attach to the textile fabric of the composite structure on one side and a soft silicone layer for attachment to the skin on the other side. The softness and flexible silicone adhesive layer with perforation pattern for attachment to the skin provides a high degree of wearing comfort. The layer may be preformsd so that it does not cover the sensitive skin of a scar.
A preferred double-sided tape is made of high-quality skin-friendly material that complies with strict safety regulations and certifications, including the ISO 13485 certification, and has passed the biocompatibility test according to the ISO 10993 standardization, which is the standard for sticking on the skin. Since the breast prosthetic device according to the invention is substantially made of textile fabrics it is relatively light and a much lesser burden to the skin of the wearer and to the fastening material. Therefore, and in view of the improved quality of the current adhesives to the body the drawbacks of attaching breast prosthetic devices directly to the skin of the patient as described above have been met to a great extent or even do no longer apply.
The attachment means according to the invention preferably has the same circular shape as the bottom side of the composite textile structure to which it is fastened. In this way the breast prosthetic device is maximally secured to the skin of the wearer. Since the double-sided adhesive tape is made of very flexible material and so is the bottom side of the composite structure (and the composite structure as whole), it follows the folds of the body.
5 In another embodiment of the invention the attachment means are two or more double-sided adhesive strips instead of a circular shape, if the wearer so prefers or for other reasons.
In a further embodiment of the invention the attachment means is an adhesive securing patch comprising a fabric or plastic polymer layer with an adhesive to the body on the one side and a Velcro type fabric on the other side. The Velcro type fabric may be attached to the lower side of the breast prosthesis device which is adjacent to the body of the wearer. In still another embodiment of the invention the adhesive securing patch has a flange on the side facing the lower side of the breast prosthesis device. On the lower side of said device a mounting means is fitted, for example a mounting ring, such that the flange and mounting ring are releasably joined together to secure the breast prosthesis device to the body of the wearer. Both the flange and the mounting means are preferably made of a plastic material. The breast prosthetic device according to the invention is a completely different approach as compared to the numerous breast devices known in the prior art, in that it has a whole newly conceived function of ornamental and prosthetic in one. In contrast to the classic breast prostheses the device according to the invention can be worn and shown as such without a bra. The new breast device is in direct contact with the body and feels like becoming part of the body. It has the sensation that the body is reshaped which regains lost emotional values. Appearance, good looking and camouflaging the injury caused by the mastectomy are important aspects of the present invention for overcoming both the physiological and psychological trauma associated therewith due to perceived inferiority relative to surrounding members of society. It is possible but not necessary that the new device is mimicking the shape of a natural female breast. The other breast is free as desired and not supported by a bra or the like. The new device can be worn as needed depending on factors such as atmosphere and mood. As such it may be considered as complementing the classic breast prostheses and provides the wearer with a wider choice of options. The invention will now be described and explained in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. It is noted that the same reference numerals in the different figures relate to the same elements which are sometimes shown in a different perspective.
In Fig. 1 a breast adornment prosthetic device (1) is shown which is built from different layers of textile around a preformed pouch or pad with fiber fill {not visible), also known as “padding” that essentially determines the shape and size of the device. Around this padding various layers of textile fabrics are designed, inter alia selected from polyester fabrics, satin, silk, organza and lace, which are stitched together to form a composite structure which is functional as a breast prosthesis for the missing breast and to camouflage the scar and it has a nice and elegant appearance. On top of the front side a sew-on stone (3) is fixed, surrounded by a variety of smaller sew-on stones. The bottom side (2) of the composite structure is a layer of satin which is attached to the double-sided tape (not visible) which completes the device (1).
Fig. 2 is an illustration of another breast adornment prosthetic device (1) according to the present invention which is made around a padding essentially in the same way as the device in Fig. 1 but with only one decorative outer layer (5) of lace covering the whole front part of the composite structure and no sew-on stones.
Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 are illustrations of the bottom side of the composite structures of the breast adornment prosthetic devices of Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, respectively. The bottom side is preferably but not necessarily a satin layer which is releasably attached to an attachment means, preferably a double-sided tape which is specially developed for this application. The bottom side of the composite structure can be provided with an adornment (6) as shown and, if desired, with a logo or the like (not shown).
Fig. 5 and Fig. 6 illustrate the way in which the breast adornment prosthetic device of Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, respectively, is worn by a mastectomy patient. These devices are light-weighted and elegant. The illustrations speak for themselves.
Fig. 7A shows schematically a mastectomy patient with a scarf (7) on the breast. In Fig. 7B is schematically shown how the scarf is camouflaged by a circular prosthetic device (1A) according to the present invention. Fig. 7C shows schematically the attachment of the circular prosthetic device (1A) to the body. The device (1A) comprises a composite structure (9) and adhesive attachment means (8), the latter being a double-sided adhesive tape in this embodiment which is adapted to attach to the textile fabric of the bottom-side of the composite structure on the one side and a special layer adapted for attachment to the skin on the other side.
Fig. 8 shows schematically a breast prosthetic device (1) according to the invention with the composite structure (9) and the attachment means (8), the composite structure (9) having a preformed inner padding (10) of fiber fill to which various layers of textile fabrics are attached. These layers are designated together by reference numeral (11).
The attachment means (8) is preferably a double-sided adhesive tape with one side (8A) to be attached to the skin of the wearer and the other side (8B) to the textile fabric. Usually, the double-sided tape is fixed or, after replacement, will be first fixed to the textile fabric. Then the breast adornment device as a whole is attached to the body of the wearer.
Fig. 9A is a schematic top view of an embodiment of the composite structure (9) according to the invention showing schematically its visible layer structure from the top to the bottom: a sew-on stone (3) on top, for example Swarovski® 3015 12 mm, an upper ring of flower lace (12) decorated with small sew-on stones (4), for example Swarovski® ss10 2038 Xilion rose, a middle ring of plissé lace (13), outer ring 3 of satin edge organza (16), outer ring 4 of satin edge organza (17), part of the padding (10) in ring shape, and outer ring 5 of satin edge organza (18).
Fig. 9B is a schematic side view of the composite structure of Fig. 9A with the same elements as depicted in Fig. 9A and, in addition, the outer ring 1 of satin edge organza (14) and outer ring 2 of satin edge organza (15). The bottom side (2) of the composite structure (9) is covered in this side view by the lower outer ring 5 of satin edge organza (18) and therefore not depicted.
While the invention has been described in conjunction with the illustrated embodiments, it will be understood that they are not intended to limit to those embodiments.
On the contrary, the invention is intended to cover all alternatives, modifications, and equivalents, which may be included within the invention as defined by the appended claims.
